Thursday, July 9, 2015
The tone of your blog is very important as you start to build your own business. It is your home on the web and making sure you have a voice that your prospects want to hear is of paramount importance.
Here are 5 tips to set the tone...
1. To set the right tone for your blog, think of whom you are talking to.
Get a picture in your mind of the person whose attention you would most like to get. How do they speak? What kinds of things are they interested in? Pick your target audience and speak in the language they are used to and expect.
2. Do not try too hard to sound highly educated.
Keep it to a 5th grade or lower level and this applies even for the rocket scientist's amongst you. Your fans do not read your blog looking for another professional article, they read it to connect with the author so ensure your tone does not require a lot of thought. This will prove difficult for you if you were or still are a professional who feels you must present in a certain way.
Reading blogs is a mostly a leisurely activity so do not make it too serious.
3. Yes your life is interesting.
A lot of people start blogging and think that their life is not interesting enough to share with their readers. They keep it to the technical aspects of their topics and then wonder why no one wants to stick around for too long reading your posts until the end.
Allow your readers to discover what you are really like so they feel connected to a human being. If you do want to make money with your blog, the human connection is essential so share more about you.
4. When you choose your tone, be consistent in the style and quality.
Try not to change your tone too frequently as your readers will get confused if you keep switching from the neighbour next door to the professor at the local university depending on your mood when you are writing. pick a style based on readership and stick to it.
5. Keep the appearance of your blogs enticing
Keep your paragraphs short and user-friendly. Thought thinking about the tone you are trying to maintain is important, the post also needs to look visually appealing. Huge blocks of text put readers off so choose instead to break things up after about 3 sentences or so.
