Why Smart Marketers Take SEO Seriously

Thursday, July 9, 2015
Did you ever wonder why, when you do a Google search for a keyword or keyphrase, some results come up first on the result page while others are farther below? Did you even ask how Google determines which websites to show on the first page of the results and which to show on page 10?
Well, the answer is simple. Search engines use advanced filtering technology that determines the most relevant results to a search query based on over 200 algorithms or factors.
How does knowing the above benefit you?
Simple! It affords you the grace to do some acceptable SEO tactics and avoid the bad ones.
Fine, but what is SEO?
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the technique of hinting search engines that your website is (or is among) the most relevant search results for a particular keyword or keyphrase.
It is a search engine's job to showcase the highest quality and most relevant webpages when a user searches for a query; SEO is how you optimize your webpage to make it relevant to queries that your target visitors use in search engines. With higher website rankings, you'll get more traffic to your website which equals more money for you (assuming you convert them well).
SEO traffic is pure gold
There are many ways to get traffic to your website but there's no better way to get consistent, free, targeted traffic other than SEO.
When you publish a new post and share it on social media, you'll get free traffic for a few days but that's not consistent.
When you pay for Facebook Adverts, Google AdWords or other pay per click traffic sources, you'll consistently get traffic to your website. Since you're paying money to get the traffic, it is not free. You'll have to continuously pay for the adverts to keep getting the traffic.
When you get referral traffic from other websites, forums or blog directories, the traffic may be free and consistent but might not be targeted.
SEO traffic is targeted because the people who found your website through search engines are already looking for the exact content, product or services you're offering on your website. So it's easy to convert them into subscribers, clients or even brand advocates.
So if you do SEO properly, free, targeted traffic will consistently pour into your website month after month without you doing extra work or spending extra money.
So that's it.
Yes, I've not told you how to do SEO. That's not the focus of this piece. My aim is to make you see the big picture and how important SEO is.
